Weekend
Gallery is a trading name for Brumfield Limited. The gallery
initially opened as part of another business, opening only
on the weekend. It moved to its current location in 2008 and
extended its opening hours. The gallery shows a strong programme
of contemporary figurative art along side a diverse range
of original and limited edition printmaking.
The
programme reflects the eclectic tastes of the Director, Jane
Brumfield. "We favour work which demonstrates the
eccentricities, fragilities and irrational nature of the human
condition. Although some of the work may lean towards the
strange and/or macabre there is always a thread of humour
or glimmer of optimism."
Jane
has 20 years of experience. She worked for many Local Authority,
and publicly funded galleries including the Crafts Council
before going freelance. Running a commercial exhibition space
is a recent development in her career. "Having my
own space is very liberating, in that I do not have to justify
my choices to anyone, and can just show what I like. but at
the same time, it is very scary watching to see if my choices
will actually sell and we can pay the rent at the end of each
month. Still, I am determined not to let that influence me
when picking work, confident that I can find a client-base
who share my taste. After all what is the point of having
your own gallery if you don't show work that you love?"
Jane
and her husband, and fellow Brumfield Limited Director, Mike
Brumfield recently moved to the US. This has created opportunities
for the gallery through an exchange
partnership with the Brumfield's new Basement
Gallery in Boise, Idaho. James Hibberd is the Weekend
Gallery's Manager. James trained as a printmaker and had worked
for Hastings Museum and Art Gallery prior to taking this position.
Jane puts the programme together and James deals with the
day to day running of the gallery.
