After watching the build up of discarded shells on the table of a French seafood restaurant, Pamina Steward felt a compulsion to use them in her work. Previously she had been manipulating toys to make installations, with a special preference to foreign varieties such as the Pokemon characters. Now, in seashells she had found objects that held their own fascination through their beauty and in the histories of the creatures that used to inhabit them.
